Elasticsearch index retention. . Learn how to use Elasticsearch Index Lifecycle Management (ILM) to automate data retention, reduce storage bloat, and improve cluster performance at scale. Jul 21, 2014 ยท As a reminder, it's best to protect your Elasticsearch cluster from the outside world via a proxy and restrict the methods that can be sent to your cluster. This way you can prevent your cluster from being ransomed. Index lifecycle management (ILM) provides an integrated and streamlined way to manage your time series data. Elastic Cloud Enterprise sets up default index lifecycle management (ILM) policies on the logging and metrics indices it collects. To solve this, Elasticsearch uses a feature called soft deletes to preserve recent deletions in the Lucene index so that they can be replayed. You can configure ILM policies to automatically manage indices according to your performance, resiliency, and retention requirements. By default, metrics indices are kept for one day and logging indices are kept for seven days. When set, it applies to any data stream that doesn't have a specific retention period defined in its index lifecycle policy. This setting provides a cluster-wide default retention period for all data streams. Elasticsearch only preserves certain recently-deleted documents in the index because a soft-deleted document still takes up some space. com It determines how long data is kept in a data stream before it is automatically deleted.
