Aluminized kapton. Kapton® is self extinguishing as it has the highest UL-94 flammability rating: V-0. Double-aluminized kapton (DAK) is commonly used in multi-layer insulation blankets in cryogenic systems. It is ideal for medium-to-long duration missions with an operating temperature range of -269°C to 400°C. It has excellent chemical resistance; there are no known organic solvents for the film. Its heat bonding and sealing capabilities make it ideal for a range of industrial applications. Designed with FEP fluoropolymer on one or both sides of Kapton® HN, this polyimide film is durable, versatile and offers added chemical resistance. Kapton® is synthesized by polymerizing an aromatic dianhydride and an aromatic diamine. Aluminized Kapton, also known as PI or polyimide film, is suitable for use in internal MLI layers, as an outermost MLI layer, or as a single-layer Flexible Optical Solar Reflector (FOSR). Also known as DAK, the aluminum coating creates a first surface mirror, which provides exceptionally low absorptance and infrared emissivity values.
